First Steps in Greece
Relocating to Greece for ethnic Greeks (omogeneis) and foreign residents requires completing essential administrative and tax procedures. The following roadmap outlines the primary steps in chronological order.
Passport / EDTO / ADET
AFM & Taxisnet
AMKA Number (KEP / EFKA)
Bank Account & DOATAP Recognition
Action Checklist
1. Legal Status and Identification
- Ethnic Greeks (omogeneis): Application for the Special Identity Card for Expatriates (EDTO).
- Foreign Citizens: Issuance of the appropriate category of Residence Permit (ADET) or entrance visa.
2. Tax Identification Number (AFM) & Taxisnet Credentials (Kleidarithmos)
The AFM is a mandatory 9-digit tax number required to sign lease agreements, open bank accounts, obtain mobile SIM cards, and secure employment. Issued along with the AFM are your Taxisnet credentials (Kleidarithmos) used to activate your online account with the AADE tax authority.
3. Social Security Number (AMKA)
The AMKA social security number provides access to public health services, prescription drugs, and legal employment. It is issued at Citizens' Service Centers (KEP) or EFKA offices.
4. Opening a Greek Bank Account
To open a personal checking account at a Greek bank (Eurobank, National Bank of Greece, Piraeus Bank, Alpha Bank), prepare the following documents:
| Document | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Passport / EDTO | Proof of identity | Valid passport or EDTO card |
| AFM Certificate | Tax number confirmation | AADE issuance document (Βεβαίωση Απόδοσης ΑΦΜ) |
| Proof of Address | Local residency verification | Lease agreement or recent utility bill |
| Proof of Income | Fund origin documentation | Tax return or employer certificate |
| Mobile Number | Connectivity confirmation | Carrier mobile account statement |
5. Degree Recognition and Accreditation
For regulated professions (physicians, dentists, engineers, teachers), academic degree accreditation through DOATAP is required prior to practicing.
